Here's a holiday song for the secular. Many of us think the tune of "Amazing Grace" is lovely but we don't happen to agree with the message. This version is for all us religion-free people. The next time you hear what you think sounds like "Amazing Grace", it just might be "Let Go Of Faith" instead. :)

"Amazing Grace" isn't a "Holiday Song", it's a hundreds year old hymn written by John Newton. You'll see it's not just a typical "religious" song, but something far more moving and profound. This particular melody was sung by the slaves in the South, as a song of hope.

Being creative is great, and creating a song about not being religious is one thing, but to change a deep religious song to fit your own beliefs is kind of wrong.

Perfect setup I guess - enslave a group of people and then impose religious doctrine that riddles them with guilt and keeps them ignorant. Let them sing pretty songs to ease the pain of their existence.

Hope? for what that their christian captors would go easy on them, not rape them, beat them or sell off their family members.

God is Santa Claus for adults. One of the tragic things about Slavery is how deeply religious it made black people. The condition of slavery is sanctioned in the bible and is proof positive how full of crap christians are. Sorry LogicalKitty, but here I don't count a single one of those songs you posted as secular at all, as they all speak of the christian holiday of christmas. Also, saying Amazing Grace is a Hymn, then saying it's not a 'Holy Day' song seems kind of contradictory, although I suppose you're under the impression the rest of us consider the 'holiday' the OP was referring to to be christmas, when I don't see where that was stated at all.

Honestly, if you were truly Atheist, you wouldn't celebrate christmas as such. Perhaps if you really felt you MUST due to society's norms creating a kind of social obligation for gift giving and the like, you'd say something for x-mas, but still...

I don't know what to say, I realize this is an old thread there aren't very many new posts... but we've got some people recommending that atheist's use the term X-mas, even though X is written identically to the Greek letter 'chi' and is the first letter of Christos which is Christ in Greek and so X-mas is not irreligious.

We've got other people being thankful that the dark ages squelched a lot of Christians when in fact it was the Catholic monasticism that preserved education in western Europe during those times.

We've got other people telling us that terms like morality are actually definable when in fact anyone with a basic understanding of Socrates knows that you can't define such opinionated words.

And mostly we have a heated and childish debate between two factions of people that are both born and bred in one small sliver of time and space whose only experience with 'Christianity' has actually been with that of Western Evangelical Protestantism, not the ancient faith of Christ.

The original song is a classic that people of all beliefs can enjoy listening to. It has substance and while its meaning is surely Christian in nature, it's still a good song by any standard.

Reading this thread is hysterical! I love those of you defending the "Christianity" of this tune... and although the words that are now popular were written by John Newton, the tune itself it much older and probably had nothing to do with Christianity.

let go of faith? you just place your faith in the idea that the very laws of physics were suspended to allow for the big bang. haha. At least we propose a reason that the laws of physics could have been broken. if someone authored the laws of science, they could break them. but if there is no Author, then there is no way the laws were broken. With atheism, either the universe was always here, or it never has been. Since we are here, an atheist must assume it has always been here.

The idea that atheism requires no faith is ludicrous. There is only one worldview that requires no faith, and that is agnosticism. The problem is: since nobody who claims to be agnostic has absolutely no assumptions, then nobody who claims to be agnostic is truly agnostic. If you begin your study assuming that God does not play a role in your study, or that he does not exist, then you are either a deist or an atheist. Without God, you must have faith that either the big bang breaks the laws of physics or that there was no big bang.

Finally, the tune was not around before the words, unless you want to explain how we actually see the authors of the musical portion of the songs.
