iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

I own a iPod Touch 2g w/ a microphone. On the summary page of Smule's Ocarina it says: [quote author=Smule]Because the Ocarina uses your integrated microphone, it is compatible with the iPhone and not the iPod Touch\[\/quote\].

Though in one of there advertisements I see one of the players using a microphone that is plugged in. I am curious if it will work with my iPod?

Dr. Connor,

This is discussed two posts down here:

In short, no, Ocarina will not run on an iPod touch 2G with or without attached microphone.

Unfortunately, probably not for a few weeks. Sorry for the buzz-kill.

So which is it? We know that it DOES work, it has just not been released for the touch. Why?

It has been more than a few weeks now...

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

I don't know dude. I remember when you first created that post and they still haven't released the touch compatible version. I was hoping that the 1.2 update had it but it didn't. Anyways I bought the SmartTalk Mic and it works great but I have no ocarina.. and the other Ocarina app sucks.

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

We just gotta wait for ocarina spirit to fix there 2 notes that sound off and then we can just use that.

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

Can anyone let us know if this feature is still going to be implemented soon or at all?

Are there some roadblocks that prevent the use of this application on the ipod touch?

If not do we have an estimate on when it will be ready? I'm more than happy to help test

the software on the ipod touch.

The official Apple mics are now released, could we get an update on what it is thats holding things up

and if there is still a planned ipod touch 2nd Gen version (or an ETA) in the pipeline or should we look elsewhere?

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

I emailed Smule about this a long time ago when the app was first released and they said that they were releasing a touch version the following day. I waited and waited, but the next version was just various bug fixes. I emailed them again and they said that support for the ipod touch 2G would come. I think everyone should email Smule about it. If they get enough emails then maybe they will make it available.

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

Ocarina was designed for the iPhone, not for the iPod touch. It was not meant to be used with an eternal microphone. Any suggestion on a good solution for using an external microphone while keeping two hands free to press the buttons are more than welcome, short of taping the mic to your mouth and clipping it to a shirt collar.

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

What a cop-out!

a)There are plenty of headset mics that would do the job.

b)If one wanted to, they could clip or tape the mic to their ipod Touch case.

c)Fashion something of your own design.

So you're basically saying that you aren't going to release it for the ipod Touch because it wouldn't look aesthetically pleasing to your team.

There doesn't seem to be any technical limitation to this working on the ipod Touch.

People who are going to use this app will figure out a way to do it.

...whatever...Merry Christmas

Releasing the app for the iPod Touch is not going to hurt anything, you will just make more money. It will not ruin the ocarina's image. I won't hate you if it's uncomfortable to play :D . Like said before there are headset mics. Honestly the people just want to have fun with the app. They have been waiting for a long time to use this app. They purchased it while it was .99 cents and they went out and bought mics just so they could play with this app. Your customers really want this app. Most of them are long time Zelda fans such as myself who just can't afford an iPhone. I am very interested in your app and I wish I could use it. Sorry for coming off a bit angry in my previous post. :D Merry Christmas!

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

Yup. Basically what I did with my SmartTalk was that I clipped it onto the iPod Touch. The 2G is thin enough for the SmartTalk clip.

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

I hope smule learn that scamming people is bad. First saying that it gonna be compatible a couple of months ago and then changes their mind. Like we already have said in the other thread many of us have bought mics and the app because it would be compatible and now it is like its not gonna be compatible in a long time. Thats what i call scamming and im not gonna buy any of of their other apps before ocarina is compatible.

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

Im just curious, the only thing preventing me currently from getting Ocarina on my 2G touch, is the fact that iTunes says its not compatible. Has anyone tried an older version of iTunes and/or confirmed that it 'would' work if we could somehow get it installed?

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

Just one other thought. I recently downloaded 'Sonic Vox', another Smule app, which uses a micropone.

Works great too. I just dont understand why Smule wont do the right thing here. Isnt that why people make apps? to be used by as many people as possible and make money?

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

The moment you've all you iPod Touch n00bs have been waiting for! How to get Ocarina for iPod Touch legitimately through the app store. No jailbreaking, no cracking, no joke! If you follow these steps you will be pleasantly surprised!

First buy Ocarina from the Appstore in iTunes on your computer. I'm sure some of you already have!

    2. Change the file extension from “.ipa” to “.zip” and open the “.zip” file.

    3. You will see a file called “iTunesMetadata.plist”. In this file there is a parameter that designates what devices the application can run on. The parameter name is “softwareSupportedDeviceIds” and the value will be “2” for Ocarina. You will want to change its value to a “1”. This allows it to work on an iPod Touch.

    4. How to edit the “.plist” file.

You should be able to just double click the file and it should open in the Property List Editor. If you don’t have the property list editor you can get it from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/d ... itpro.html

Otherwise you can upload the file to

      http://www.kilrathy.net/plist-converter

and this will turn it into a more human readable format that you can edit.

Once you have opened the file, find the “softwareSupportedDeviceIds” parameter and change it’s value to a “1”.

If you are using the Property List Editor this is super easy but if you are using a text editor it should look something like this.

      <key>softwareSupportedDeviceIds</key>

      <array>

      <integer>1</integer>

      </array>

      b. PC

If you open the file in Notepad, you should be able to find the “softwareSupportedDeviceIds” parameter and change it’s value to a “1”. It should look something like this, although it most likely won’t be formatted so nicely.

      <key>softwareSupportedDeviceIds</key>

      <array>

      <integer>1</integer>

      </array>

If it just looks like a bunch of jibberish, try converting it here first.

      http://www.kilrathy.net/plist-converter

    5. Once you have made the change, save the file and make sure to replace it in the “.zip” file.

    6. After you have edited the parameter in the “.plist” file and saved it back in the “.zip” folder, rename the “.zip” back to “.ipa” so iTunes will recognize it again.

    7. Make sure the “Ocarina.ipa” file is still in your “Mobile Applications” folder.

    8. Now you can connect your iPod Touch 2G, sync it, and it should properly install Ocarina.

That’s it! Don’t forget that you need an external microphone of some sort in order to play Ocarina on the touch.

Here are some suggestions on microphones to buy.

Griffin SmartTalk -- $10 to $20

Phillips from Target -- $10

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

Version 1.3 is iPod Touch 2G compatible :D . Sorry 1G :?

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

Actually it works on the 1G as well. If you want a mic for the 1G though you are going to have to get the MacAlly IVOICE 3. It works quite well though. I've tested it at Smule HQ.

Re: iPod Touch 2G w/ mic; Will it work?

I have a mic called a "Thumbtack" made by "Switcheasy." It resembles a thumbtack and you guessed it, no cord. It appears that it would work great for the ocarina but when I plug it in I lose the external speaker. I know it is working because I get a blow into the mic prompt and ripples across the screen when I blow on the mic, but I get no sound. Anybody have any ideas? Would this be fixable in software or is it a hardware issue with the headphone jack?
