Welcome to the forum madz. Keep on playing and your tune's will get up there sooner or later.

I don't get it. Do they have to be good to have a melody?
Hey madz,
They don't have to be good at all, in fact the tune can be random notes. The server is set to upload snippets after a certain period of time running the application. So just play continuously for, say 15 or 20 minutes and you should have some melodies uploading.
hope that helps some.

You also have to make sure that your iPhone 3G can locate you. Basicly start Maps and hit the little icon at bottom left corner and wait a while. If it says that it can't get location or something like that, Smule Ocarina will not upload any of your songs. I'm not sure how this works on first gen iPhones as they don't have GPS.
Also on similar topic, Smule Ocarina wants to get your location every time you start it. Would it be possible to change that behavior? Someone might want to turn off the location service to extend battery life a little, but then whenever you start Smule Ocarina it will complain about location service being off and blahblah. And my guess is that it won't upload your melodies then. Maybe add some kind of "traveling mode" or such? When it's turned on, it will get your location everytime Ocarina is started (current behavior). When it's off, Ocarina will use some pre-stored location or something. For example add a button like "Get location". That would be good also for those cases where the iPhone can't get location. The user would know why his melodies aren't being uploaded.
